Lil Shelton passed away January 24, 2021.

The FHCAMD is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Lil Shelton, Maryland field hockey coaching legend and the first president of our state high school association. Having coached field hockey at Severna Park High School for 37 seasons, leading her teams to a record 20 state titles, Lil Shelton is a name synonymous with field hockey and one you cannot mention without speaking of how she helped shape field hockey in the state of Maryland through her tireless dedication, love of  the many girls who played for her and love of the sport.

Along with her 20 state titles, Shelton lead her teams to 31 county championships, 29 regional titles and a career record of 544-60-10. While her team’s accolades speak for themselves, Lil Shelton was a trailblazer for field hockey and women’s sports. Her love of the sport is evident in the many players turned friends and all of those players she groomed who carried on her love of the game as they too became coaches. She will be greatly missed but her contributions to our sport and to evolution of women’s sports will live on forever.
